As president of Sutherland Institute for over ten years, Paul Mero believes in people and the American family. His main emphasis has been on immigration, education and maintaining traditional family values.
The Sutherland Institute was established by Utah businessman and philanthropist Gaylord K. Swim in 1995. Sutherland Institute prides itself on being an independent, nonprofit, public policy group. Its founder, Swim, believed in working within the judicial system to effect needed changes on a statewide and local level. Though Swim has since passed away, Paul Mero strives to continue his legacy.
Paul Mero and Sutherland Institute are both well-known in political circles for their outspoken stance on many controversial issues. As a conservative think tank, Sutherland Institute often works with local politicians to bring about positive changes in public policy.
Mr. Mero is well known on the political scene and often engages in debates with opponents using local radio as a venue. Paul Mero is also an accomplished orator and often asked to speak at various conventions and conferences. He has written many papers and reports on such tough issues as immigration reform.
The Sutherland Institute provides educational seminars to local residents and believes that every Utahn should support public policies that give deference to people to make personal choices and then accept responsibility for those choices.
Paul Mero, along with Sutherland Institute also espouses the belief that a free and prosperous Utah begins with strong family structures. Sutherland Institute encourages every Utahn to value and respect legal marriage. They encourage citizens to stay involved in local government.
Along with Allan Carlson, Paul Mero co-authored the book The Natural Family: A Manifesto. In it, Mero discusses the great need to preserve and protect traditional family values. Mero is a graduate of Brigham Young University in Utah. He is a loyal family man and lives with his wife in Sandy, Utah. The couple has six children.
